Other : Argus II Geothermal Heat Probe

Other : Argus II Geothermal Heat Probe : Description

The Argus II is a geothermal heat probe capable of highly accurate temperature measurements in seabed sediments.

Heat flux is measured by plunging the probe into the soft bottom sediments. Temperature gradient information is either transmitted to the surface or recorded in-situ. Thermal conductivity determinations are made by transient heating of the thermistor probe assembly after insertion into the bottom sediments.

Typically, the instrument is able to penetrate 7m of sediment under it's own weight. In addition to a temperature string containing between 8 and 14 thermistors, the unit also records seawater temperature, pressure, time, instrument tilt, two thermal references, and battery voltage.

Description:The Argus II is a geothermal heat probe capable of highly accurate temperature measurements in seabed sediments.

Configuration:-
Application:The instrument enables the geophysicist to examine in detail the ocean crust and mantle, tectonic and thermal processes such as magma intrusion and hydrothermal circulation. Potential geothermal resources can be located and mapped.

Data is normally collected while the deployment vessel is drifting or underway at low speeds (ie. 1.2 knot). The instrument is used "pogo-style", providing sufficient time to extract the probe from the seabed before it is swung back into an equilibrium position.

Int Description:Geothermal Heat Probe
Max Number Of Sensors:14 thermistors plus associated tilt, pressure, water temperature sensors
Depth Rating:6000
Housing Material:7075-T6 Aluminium
Weight Air:340 kg (not including lead weights); additional weight added for specific deployment requirements
Weight Water:n/a
Length:Varies based upon configuration; length of stinger varies from 3 to 9m
Diameter:Different physical components have varying diameters, ie. the stinger has a diamter of 2.25 while the thermistor-bow has a dimaeter of 0.375 inches
Power Source :Battery
Housing Notes:The major mechanical components of the Argus II include a rigid stinger, one full length violin-bow sensor tube, and a weight stand with two pressure cases.

The weight stand is designed to accommodate two pressure cases, where electronics and battery packs are located. Each pressure housing has a diameter of 6.5 inches; housing length will vary based upon battery requirements, but averages about 24 inches.

The stinger, which is used to penetrate the sediment and is designed to provide structural support for the sensor tube, is a standard drill rod with a 2.25" diameter.

The thermistor-bow is a sensor tube with a 0.375 inch diameter, filled with mineral oil to positive pressure to ensure minimal compression in deep water. The thermistor-bow is constructed of a steel alloy.
